After many days of rain, storms and flooding and two drier days, the recovery can now get started. The government yesterday announced that it was providing 6.2 billion baht amongst other aid packages to help the flood victims in the South of Thailand.
2.9 billion baht will be distributed in 5,000 baht amounts to each affected family to start with and 3.2 billion baht to help the affected farmers. This does not, however cover rubber and palm plantation damage, which is yet to be assessed,
The amounts will go to those affected in Surat Thani, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Chumphon, Trang, Phangnga, Satun, Songkhla and Narathiwat. It will not, however reach families in some cases until June 22.
Many roads are still impassable which has led to food and other commodities being in short supply in some areas.
South bound trains from the North can still only get as far as Chaiya station in Surat Thani.
The death toll as at yesterday stood at 47, with 20 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 10 each in Surat Thani and Krabi, two each in Phatthalung, Trang and Chumphon, and 1 in Phangnga.
Phetkasem Highway was still impassable for small vehicles, the main route to the South.
Nakhon Si Thammarat airport is likely to re-open tomorrow.
